What Michael Says
The moment I walked out of the screening of Captain America: Civil War, I knew I wanted to score Spider-Man Homecoming. I stopped Marvel president Kevin Feige before leaving the theater, to explain to him why. I loved the clumsiness of the character, that crazy impulse he had to run into the fray of things without even thinking, as most teenage boys do. I also liked that this was going to be set in high school, where Peter was going to be tortured by the other kids, and not just by supervillains. It was important for me to start with a theme that would at first feel young and naive, but would eventually turn more heroic and epic.
Listen for: Pizzicato violin and plucky guitar sounds, along with a rhythm section that included buckets, odd metal objects, and a plastic oil drum instead of the standard kick drum.
